This one is from Clare Ramsaran, who was interviewed on the 19th January 2018.
Firstly, could you just explain to us what it is you do?
I build databases and train others to build databases. Currently, I teach online and have trainees in the US, The Netherlands and here in England. I’m also returning to web design work. And in my spare time (!), I’m working on a novel.
What inspired you to start-up your business?
I love training and I love building databases! The work I’m doing allows me to do both. I did similar work within organisations in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, taking the leap a few years ago to become a consultant. It’s been working out very well so far.
What have been the biggest challenges of setting up your business?
Paperwork and regulations – trying to find out whether the sole trader or limited company route was best for me in my situation and the implications of the different choices. Also negotiating contracts.
Can you tell us more about your business?
I’m a Consultant, primarily focused on working with the Salesforce Database. Currently, I’m training others to be Database Administrators and preparing them for a certification exam.
How do you advertise your business?
Right now, word of mouth and recommendations. Also, people have found me on LinkedIn.
What would you say is your proudest Business moment so far?
After moving from California back to England in June 2017, I studied very hard and passed a tough 4-hour certification exam in order to qualify as an Official Salesforce Trainer. This opened lots of doors for me.
What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to set-up there?
Do your research. Prioritise the different tasks you need to do – there won’t be time to do all of them. And don’t forget to look after yourself as well as looking after your business.
