Our Beacon Programmes
Our Beacon Programmes are education events dedicated to inspiring enterprise in schools. All of our Beacon Challenges are one day education activities held at our business centres or in your school or college.
The Beacon challenges are our flagship events. The age range for Beacon is from 10 years old to higher education and adult ages; Beacon encourages participants, working in teams, to get involved in various highly charged, competitive enterprise challenges.
The Beacon portfolio includes:
Beacon Business
Teams of participants (aged 14+) compete against one another in this one day challenge. Each team develops a business idea to present in the ‘Dragons’ Den’. Team work is key, as students have to deal with the unexpected, assessing risks and exploiting opportunities. The skills students will learn include business awareness, entrepreneurial and organisational skills.
Beacon Business Junior is also available for for students aged 10-14. Working in teams of six, students develop a basic business idea from concept through designing a logo, selling to customers and considering financial issues.
Beacon Life
This challenge offers students life skills training; this involves managing personal finances and understanding the long-term implications of decisions. It helps participants become more informed and confident consumers of financial products and learn how to deal with the unexpected, assessing risks and comparing long-term and short-term benefits. This may be a suitable event to compliment life skills lesson plans.
Beacon Green
This challenge focuses on the skills required to launch environmental projects within schools. It teaches students to audit their school and research solutions to enable them to effectively project manage this audit. The end result is a review of how much energy and money the school saves in both the short and long term.
Beacon Enterprise
Students are challenged to use their enterprise and innovation skills to plan a fund raising event for their school or college, competing in teams to achieve the most viable idea. Through a series of decision-making tasks they consider how to create, organise and implement the event. Team working, project management and a competitive element make this an exciting and stimulating day, culminating in team presentations.
Beacon for Teachers
Beacon also offers training for teachers, this is built around the Beacon Business Challenge. Teams compete against each other with business ideas and then pitch in the ‘Dragons’ Den’. ‘Pause Button’ moments are designed into the challenge so teachers can reflect on the activity and how it can be translated into the classroom. Everyone leaves with a clear definition of enterprise that will help inspire activity across the curriculum.
